Inês Maia, Connected Car Cluster Head at Critical TechWorks (CTW), joined the panel discussion "Innovation in the Age of AI: Where Are We and Where Are We Going?" at the Standvirtual Summit 2026, where she shared insights into how artificial intelligence, connected ecosystems and software-defined vehicles are transforming the future of mobility.
Held at the Estoril Congress Centre, the Standvirtual Summit brought together industry leaders, mobility experts and technology innovators to discuss the rapid evolution of the automotive sector and the technologies shaping tomorrow's driving experience.
During the discussion, Inês highlighted the growing importance of connected vehicle ecosystems and the role CTW plays in developing and operating BMW Group's global connected car platform, which today supports more than 22 million vehicles worldwide.
"We already have millions of connected cars and we will not go back," she stated, highlighting how connectivity has become a fundamental pillar of the modern vehicle experience.
A key focus of her contribution was the evolution from connected vehicles to intelligent, software-defined cars capable of understanding context, anticipating needs and continuously improving through data and advanced digital services.
"We're turning the car into a smart device that anticipates the driver's needs," said Inês. "If you tell the vehicle you're running late, it should be able to adjust your route and update your calendar seamlessly."
She also emphasised the importance of creating the right conditions for innovation to thrive, including reliable connectivity, transparent data practices and a robust regulatory framework that fosters both technological progress and user trust.
Looking ahead, Inês described a future where vehicles become increasingly autonomous in their ability to learn, adapt and evolve.
"We're not just connecting cars to the internet; we're enabling them to learn, decide and evolve."
The participation at Standvirtual Summit 2026 reinforces Critical TechWorks' commitment to advancing BMW Group's digital transformation and developing innovative mobility solutions that are helping shape the future of connected driving.
